The number of applications received by a hiring manager for a particular position can range from dozens to hundreds, with some sources stating an average of 36 applications per open role.  With that in mind, it is essential that one does all they can to grab and maintain the attention of a hirer, some key ways by which to do so include the following:

  • Customise or tailor the cover letter

With cover letters, one size does not fit all.  Although you may be applying for similar roles, it is key that you show that you have read and understand a job advertisement (and its specific requirements) AND are interested in a company in particular (with reasons why).

  • Focus on the company

As just now mentioned, stating reasons why you are interested in working for a company in a cover letter is key – these may be things listed in the job advertisement OR understood via a little online research.  Also important is telling a hiring manager what it is you can bring to a company and specific team within it.

  • Make your cover letter the correct length and perfect in accuracy

A cover letter should be no more than one page so to ensure that it is all read – don’t reduce font size to fit more in but, rather, ensure that only the most pertinent information is included.  Additionally, make sure to use Spelling & Grammar on Microsoft Word so to eliminate any spelling errors or grammar inaccuracies.
