The terms ‘resume’ and ‘CV’ are both used in Australia somewhat interchangeably, but the truth is that there are in fact distinct differences between the two.

A resume (coming from the French word résumé,’ meaning ‘summary’) is a concise summary of one’s work experience, skills, and qualifications tailored specifically for a job application.  A resume is typically:

  • Only one or two pages in length

  • Used to highlight achievements and skills that match the requirements of a particular role

  • The norm for most job applications in Australia (with the exception of academic, scientific research, medical, and grant-seeking positions)

A true curriculum vitae (or CV), on the other hand, is a comprehensive, detailed document outlining an entire academic and professional career.  A CV is generally:

  • Multiple pages in length

  • Inclusive of sections such as publications and presentations, awards, and memberships

  • Used more commonly as a term for job application documents in countries including New Zealand and the UK
